Our Beliefs

We Are a Confessing Church

First Presbyterian Church joyously affirms:
  1. That Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way of salvation.
  2. That holy Scripture is the Triune God's revealed Word, the Church's only infallible rule of faith and life.
  3. That God's people are called to holiness in all aspects of life. This includes honoring the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, the only relationship within which sexual activity is appropriate.

Guiding Statements for the Ministry of First Presbyterian Church, Tacoma

The following was approved by our Session in October 2005 and revised in 2006:
  • Our Vision—To reflect the Love of Christ.
  • Our Purpose—To glorify through obedience to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
  • Our Core Values—As a confessing church, we affirm the authority of Scripture and adhere to historic Christian creeds and confessions that affirm: the sovereignty of God, the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of Jesus Christ and His Second Coming, salvation by faith in Christ alone, the importance and power of prayer and the priesthood of all believers.
  • Our Methods of Mission—We accomplish ministry by practicing: A balance of grace and truth, a Kingdom orientation, personal faith lived out in community, team ministry, holistic mission, and celebrative worship of the Triune God.
  • Our Statement to the Community—Join Us on the Kingdom Journey.

How to Have a Fulfilled Life

  • God's Purpose for You: Peace and life through a relationship with Him. “I [Jesus] came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
  • Our Problem: Self-centered disregard for God’s will (sin) that leads to a separation of relationship between people and God forever. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
  • Our Attempt at a Remedy:We try to be accepted by God and get into a relationship with Him on our own terms and efforts through religion, philosophy, good works, and morality. It doesn’t work! “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” (Prov. 14:12)
  • God’s Remedy: What we can’t do God did through Jesus. The cross spans the separation between people and God. “For Christ... died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God.” (1 Peter 3:18)
  • Our Response: Trust Jesus as Lord and Savior; through Jesus we have a relationship with God forever! “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12)
